About PhD Program
The Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare focuses on preparing students as professional scholars who will make a significant contribution to social work research and evaluation. The course of study to complete the degree includes required and elective courses, a First and Second examination, and completion of a dissertation.

Prospective students must meet the following requirements to be considered for the Ph.D. Program in Social Welfare at The Graduate Center:
- An M.S.W. or related Master’s degree (i.e., Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Education, etc.) from an accredited program
- A minimum of three years Post-Masters experience working in the human services
- Demonstrated capacity for doctoral study through an excellent academic record, exemplary professional accomplishment, and evidence of scholarly potential
- Career ambitions consistent with doctoral study, such as a desire to conduct clinical, organizational, or policy research in human service organizations; design and implement innovative social welfare programs and policies; or career as an academic scholar

The Graduate Center Offers a variety of financial awards, scholarships, grants, and employment opportunities to supplement or extend current students’ five-year fellowship awards and provide additional research and dissertation support.
These financial resources are administered by different offices at the Graduate Center, including the Office of Financial Aid, the Provost’s Office, and centers and institutes that are part of the Graduate Center.
