Our rigorous PhD program prepares researchers, scholars, and educators to advance the field of social welfare and social work practice.

The fulltime PhD in Social Work program typically takes four years. Each student is assigned a faculty mentor with similar research interests. Students spend two years gaining research skills, then two years conducting independent scholarly research.

The Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW) prepares social workers to improve vulnerable lives at home and around the world. We seek applicants from a variety of personal, educational, and professional backgrounds. Our admissions team guides prospective students through the application process, considering applicants’ experiences while assisting with questions and concerns. We value your lived experience, therefore no GRE is required to apply.

30 required credits and 15 elective credits (45 credit hours) required for PhD in Social Work.

PhD applicants are fully funded with a doctoral fellowship valued at more than $200,000 over four years.  This includes tuition, an annual living stipend, health insurance, and conference support.
