About PhD Program,

The mission of the Doctoral Program in Social Work at the Steve Hicks School is to train the next generation of scientists and stewards of the social work discipline who are dedicated to advancing social justice and social change. We seek to prepare an exceptional cadre of scientists to provide leadership and education for the profession and conduct rigorous transdisciplinary research with the principal aim of advancing social work practice, eliminating social and health inequities, and enhancing human well-being.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA

The PhD in Social Work offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with emphasis on advanced research methods and statistics. The program requires 47 credit hours excluding dissertation.

  • GPA of 3.00 or above in upper-division (junior and senior) courses and in any completed graduate work.
  • Minimum grade of B on a college or above statistics course. Research methods courses do not fulfill this requirement.
  • International applicants from countries with primary language other than English: scores for TOEFL (minimum of 100, 25 in each section preferred) and TSE, or TOEFL-iBT. We do not accept IELTS.
  • Show capacity for advanced academic work and potential for scholarship.
  • Demonstrate excellent writing and analytic skills, show evidence of research interests and capabilities.
  • The GRE score requirement is waived for the Fall 2025-2026 application cycle.

PhD Funding Coverage,

The Doctoral Program in Social Work guarantees four years of full funding to all admi9ed students, including a salary or s;pend of no less than $30,000 per year for living expenses. Opportuni;es for a fiEh year of funding are oEen available for students making sa;sfactory progress toward the degree but who would benefit from a 5th year in the program.

  • The primary source of full funding for doctoral students is Graduate Student Employment supplemented by small fellowships from the Steve Hicks School.
  • Highly competitive applicants are eligible for one-to-two years of full fellowship funding through University Graduate Fellowships sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies.
