PhD project in A post-surgery hospital discharge intervention for caregivers of children with congenital heart disease (CHD)

Overview

In children with CHD requiring surgery, caregivers play a vital role in managing the child’s condition after hospital discharge. However, many caregivers are ill-prepared. A novel post-surgery intervention to address this will be developed and feasibility tested.

Background:
Children with CHD who undergo cardiac surgery are at risk for various adverse outcomes, including increased caregiver burden.

Aim and objectives:
The aim is to develop and test the feasibility of a novel post-surgery hospital discharge intervention for caregivers. The objectives are: 1. To develop a novel intervention. 2. To implement the intervention. 3. To test the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention.

Methodology:
A two-arm pragmatic feasibility trial with embedded qualitative study will be conducted with a sample of caregivers of children with CHD who underwent surgery. Outcome measures will include intervention logs, fidelity checks, acceptability data and interviews.

Expected outcomes:
Increased caregiver knowledge, confidence and satisfaction in managing post-surgical care of children with CHD.
