This research aims at discovery and development of novel active materials for next-generation lithium-free batteries. Net-zero economies require high-capacity batteries to enable clean transportation and store renewable energy. Although lithium batteries (e.g. lithium-ion, lithium-air) can store a large amount of energy, their constituent materials are highly hazardous and not sustainable.

A safe and more sustainable alternative is needed for next-generation batteries. Here, the PhD student will screen a large variety of sustainable metal oxides and/or chalcogenides using high-throughput combinatorial vapour deposition techniques to develop understanding of the correlation between materials characteristics and electrochemical charge-discharge capacities.
