The project has two main objectives. (1) To develop a new account, the Strawson-Hart account, of the nature of morality. (2) To present a new approach, the responsibility-first approach, to the study of moral responsibility. We start from the thought that P.F. Strawson’s ‘Freedom and Resentment’, the key text in responsibility theory, cannot be understood without grasping Strawson’s conception of morality. We argue that H.L.A. Hart’s work sheds light on Strawson’s. Their accounts of morality are mutually enriching, which makes it possible to develop a ‘Strawson-Hart account’. We argue that this account is convincing and distinct from existing ones. Moreover, the similarities between law and morals highlighted in the Strawson-Hart account open up the possibility of a new approach to the study of moral responsibility, the ‘responsibility-first approach’.

Within the IKS Interdisciplinary Research Group, you will investigate the size and shape of radiolanthanides, from the stable isotopes all the way to the proton drip line, where the proton is no longer bound by the nuclear force, but only by the a Coulomb barrier across which it must first tunnel. But where is the proton? Does it change the size of nucleus already? Nobody knows and you could be the first person to measure it! This investigation will be carried out by means of resonance laser spectroscopy at radioactive ion beam facilities (ISOLDE at CERN, S3-LEB at GANIL).
