6. Postdoctoral Fellowship

About Postdoctoral Position

The Markey Cancer Center is seeking a Post-Doctoral Scholar. We have established the importance of neurotensin (NT), a gut hormone peptide, in obese development and its associated metabolic disorders. Obesity is associated with an increase in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence. We also found that NT regulates intestinal epithelial cells as well as intestinal stem cells (ISC) in a manner dependent on the availability of nutrients. Under nutrient-rich conditions, NT promotes crypt cell proliferation. Under conditions of nutrient depletion, NT enhances ISC function.

Obesity may rise intestinal carcinogenesis by increasing Intestinal ISC/progenitor’s population, stemness, and niche. We will investigate whether NT regulates CRC carcinogenesis via ISC or their niche. In addition, we are also interested in studying whether NT regulates CRC CSCs. The new postdoc. will perform the in vitro experiments including cell culture, western blot, qPCR, IHC or ELISA. He/or she will perform intestinal crypt isolation and 3D organoid culture, tumor spheroid culture from patients. He/or she will also work with mice, such as sacrificing mice and collecting tissues.

7. Postdoctoral Fellowship

About Postdoctoral Position

A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Spassieva Laboratory at the University of Kentucky, Lexington KY. The postdoctoral scientist will be working on projects studying sphingolipid neurotoxicity, specifically investigating: 1) the role of sphingolipid pathway in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and 2) mechanisms underlying sphingoid base-induced neurotoxicity in ataxia and other neurodegenerative diseases. The research in these projects includes utilizing neuronal and glial primary cell cultures and animal models and employing contemporary technologies for molecular, biochemical, imaging, and lipid analyses.

The successful candidate is expected to have knowledge in neuroscience and/or cell biology and experience with neuronal and/or glial primary cultures and with rodent animal models. Knowledge and experience in lipids are desired, but not limiting for a successful application. The successful candidate is expected to have substantial level of independence in project development and manuscript writing. Candidates who have recently obtained their PhD degree will be preferred.

8. Postdoctoral Fellowship

About Postdoctoral Position

A postdoctoral position is available with Prof. A.-F. Miller at the University of Kentucky. Research projects involve production, mutation, immobilization and characterization of flavin-containing enzymes critical to energy metabolism and, electron transfer. The project goals are to articulate principles underlying the extraordinary efficiency, speed and activity of biological enzymes so that the principles can be implemented in novel materials and devices. The specific targets are flavoenzymes that execute electron transfer bifurcation, to learn how they are able to produce higher-energy reductants based on less reactive (but more abundant) fuel. Activities will include computational, spectroscopic, kinetic and thermodynamic characterizations to elucidate protein-flavin interactions underlying activity.
