The laboratory of Dr. Susan Waltz in the Department of Cancer Biology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine currently has a postdoctoral fellow position open. The position is available under an Institutional T32 Training Program in Cancer Therapeutics sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and requires US citizenship or the applicant to possess a Green Card. The Waltz laboratory utilizes cutting edge genetic tools, including gene-targeted mice, to study the role of receptor tyrosine kinases and growth factors in cancer pathogenesis.
We have shown that the Ron receptor tyrosine kinase and its ligand play fundamental roles in breast and prostate tumorigenesis. Our research into the mechanisms by which this receptor mediates cancer progression have revealed novel interactions between tumor epithelia cells and cells of the innate immune system (such as macrophages) which are linked through this signaling cascade.

The project explores the idea that altered activity in brain stress-reward circuits drives the stress-buffering effects of pleasurable behaviors. More specifically, it identifies the neurocircuit mechanisms by which chronic engagement with a natural (food) reward protects from the adverse consequences of chronic stress on anxiety- and sociability-related behaviors. Dr. Vladimir Bogdanov is recruiting a Post Doctoral Fellow to work in his lab focusing on alternatively spliced Tissue Factor (asTF) as a potential therapeutic target in gastrointestinal malignancies. Alternatively spliced Tissue Factor (asTF) is a soluble form of Tissue Factor (TF), the trigger of blood clotting. We were the first to report that asTF is elevated in the cancer lesions and circulating blood of patients suffering from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Mechanistically, asTF protein acts as a cell agonist promoting growth and spread of malignant cells; our recently developed inhibitory antibody against asTF is currently being tested in animal models. Areas of interest include, but not limited to, the consequences of antibody-mediated inhibition of asTF on primary and metastatic tumor growth; the mechanisms regulating asTF biosynthesis in malignant cells; and the potential utility of asTF as a biomarker of disease aggressiveness and/or recurrence.

The lab focuses on novel mechanisms of resistance to ionizing radiation that have the potential to translate to the clinic. Recent projects have focused on the role of glutaminase inhibition and nanoparticle-based radiation enhancement in head and neck cancer. Ongoing projects will take advantage of access to our animal irradiator, a brand-new cabinet irradiator within the lab, and access to the Cincinnati Proton Therapy Center. Projects use existing cell lines within the lab, relevant mouse models, and human samples when required. This is a co-Pl led lab, with Dr. Trisha Wise-Draper, whose laboratory studies mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapeutics. As translation to the clinic is a priority, there is frequent collaboration between bench scientists and clinicians.

A full time Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Chenran Wang in the Department of Cancer Biology, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The postdoctoral position is dedicated to study the roles of astrocyte in regulating neurogenesis of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). The Wang laboratory also focuses on the functions and mechanisms of selective autophagy and lipid metabolisms in development and neurogenesis of postnatal neural stem cells. The lab developed novel genetic mouse models to study aberrant neurogenesis in TSC1-deficient mouse brain. We use a variety of genetically engineered mouse models combined with single cell RNA-seq, single nuclei RNA-seq, single cell lineage tracing, hiPSC derived organoids, chemogenetics, clarity technique, patch clamp, metabolic/molecular/cellular approaches to gain insights of neural stem cell and neurogenesis in a human developmental disorder.
