Here at Tippie, we’re a leader in business analytics research and education. In 2021 the Business Analytics Department won the prestigious UPS George D. Smith Prize that is awarded annually by INFORMS, the largest international association of analytics and operations research professionals.
For decades, we’ve been wrangling volumes of data, solving the most complex analytical puzzles. We did big data before big data was cool. And now that the world has caught up, we’re riding the front edge of an exciting wave.
Working hand-in-hand with our faculty, you’ll take your analytical and modeling skills to the next level through one of three specializations. Our grads are in high demand by academia, sure, but the private sector is also clamoring for business analytics PhDs. That means you can map out your own perfect-fit career path.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Tippie’s PhD programs all share the same minimum requirements as required by the University of Iowa Graduate College. Applicants must have:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited American college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
- A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.
- Met or exceeded Graduate College English Proficiency Requirements(international students only).
The PhD in business analytics requires 72 semester hours of credit, in addition to a dissertation. The typical time to complete the degree is five years.
The plan of study is very flexible. You can take elective coursework in any year of the program. The outline below is a sample for demonstration purposes; we’ll work with you to outline a plan of study that aligns with your goals.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All of our PhD programs provide funding. The stipend is typically compensation for a teaching or research assistantship position. High-potential candidates may be chosen for additional scholarships or fellowships.
You’ll be automatically considered for funding when you apply. Details on the package awarded to you will be provided with your admissions offer.
We offer full funding to virtually all admitted students, which includes the following:
- 100% covered tuition cost and fees
- A minimum 9-month stipend (approximately $20,041, with annual adjustments)
- Comprehensive health insurance plan (covered at 90% for the student)
In addition, certain departments may offer other benefits, such as:
- Departmental scholarships to supplement the living stipend
- Summer fellowships, teaching or research appointments, or other scholarships
- Funding for research presentations at major conferences
- Paid time off to pursue independent research
- Paid professional membership dues
In general, you’ll be guaranteed four years of financial support. Your funding package may vary from year to year (for example, you may receive extra funding after completing comprehensive exams). Funding for year five is typically granted provided you’re making progress toward completing your degree.
