About PhD Position
As a PhD research fellow, you will take part in the PhD programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UiB. The programme corresponds to a period of three years and leads to the PhD degree. To be eligible for admission you must normally have an educational background corresponding to a master’s degree with a scope of 120 ECTS credits, which builds on a bachelor’s degree with a scope of 180 ECTS credits (normally 2 + 3 years), or an integrated master’s degree with a scope of 300 ECTS credits (5 years). Master’s degrees must normally include an independent work of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits. As a part of the WindSYS collaborative project, this PhD work will focus on analysing measurements and modelling the underwater noise in the close vicinity of Hywind Tampen offshore floating wind park. The work will also explore how this noise can affect the local ecosystem. A series of research questions need to be answered in this PhD project, including how the vibration of structure under varying forcing conditions is correlated to the noise generation and propagation; How the measurements and modelling of underwater noise can take into account various factors such as turbine’s tower vibration, wind speed, ocean surface waves, and water conditions; What the role of such measurements/modelling would be in understanding the intricate relationship between the noise emitted by floating turbines and marine ecosystems (specifically pelagic fish). These questions will be further developed to align with the candidates’ specific interests and abilities.

Background: Minimal-change disease (MCD) is a kidney disease that primarily affects glomerular podocytes. MCD represents the most frequent chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children and adolescents. Conventional treatment involves steroids. However, children and adolescents with MCD may be primarily or secondarily resistant to steroids. Main objective: Customize the management of MCD by identifying podocyte markers to supplement the diagnostic renal biopsy with increased prognostic value and then predict treatment response in a non-invasive manner.

Non-traditional stable isotopes provide a promising tool for understanding subsurface processes in seafloor hydrothermal systems. However, interpretations from natural samples are currently hampered by limited knowledge about stable isotope fractionation under hydrothermal conditions. This project aims to study the isotope effects that occur during the leaching and mobilization of metals from host rocks in the reaction zones of hydrothermal systems, using a rock record-based approach. The successful candidate will collect and study samples from hydrothermal alteration zones in ophiolites, determine their Fe and Cu isotopic composition using a multi-collector ICP-MS, and use this to assess the sign and magnitude of isotope fractionation during hydrothermal leaching. The results from this project will be used to re-evaluate recently obtained Fe and Cu isotope data from active seafloor hydrothermal vent fields.

The project is part of UiBs Centre for Sustainable Management initiative (CESAM). A major goal of CESAM is to develop NCPNorge, a widely applicable model that will predict the social impacts of ecosystem change across the whole of Norway. Such an initiative is a major undertaking, and the project needs to be completed in several steps. The first of these, and a major pre-requisite, is the main aim of this project: to quantify which of nature’s contributions to people (NCP) are most demanded by different stakeholders in Norway, in a social-ecological research project. This project will also address the lack of information regarding what drives the demand for ecosystem services, a neglected element of their management.

The S-TRANET project led by NORCE aims to develop, validate and apply a technological framework to monitor hydrological risks and hazardous events occurring across the Norwegian rail transport infrastructure. S-TRANET will especially exploit existing fibre optic communication networks to derive geophysical measurements related to subsurface water below the trackbed. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, the Norwegian Railway Directorate, Bane NOR and Politecnico di Torino are project partners, along with NORCE and the University of Bergen.
