This Royal Society funded post is available for 3 years with a start date in October 2024. Earlier or later starting times in 2024 are possible. The successful applicant will use numerical simulations of dust evolution in protoplanetary discs to investigate how exoKuiper belts form. The output of those simulations will be compared with the latest ALMA and JWST observations. The post will include details of duties: adapting exisiting software to simulate exoKuiper belts formation, simulating observations of protoplanetary and exoKuiper belts, and comparing simulations to ALMA observations. The post will include carrying out extensive evaluation and development of the UK Earth System model (UKESM). Experience with developing complex computational models on HPC platforms is essential. Additionally, it is essential that applicants have experience handling and analysing large (model) data-sets. Experience working with chemistry transport/climate models is desirable, as is knowledge of high-latitude and/or marine aerosol systems. The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Researchers to study the biology of pluripotency in the team of Prof Austin Smith. These European Research Council funded posts are available from 2 January 2024 to 30 June 2026. Based in the interdisciplinary Living Systems Institute, the successful applicants will join a world-leading programme of investigations into the plasticity of the pluripotency network in different mammals. Applicants should be motivated by fundamental curiosity with a particular interest in early development and/or cell fate decision-making.

Post 1: Naïve pluripotent stem cells have to date been established only from rodents and primates. Our goal is to design signalling environments for capturing naïve pluripotent stem cells from livestock and other mammals, including marsupials. Approaches will include pluripotency network resetting and somatic cell reprogramming, as well as direct derivations from livestock embryos. This post requires cell culture aptitude, experience with genetic manipulations, and knowledge of developmental signalling.

Post 2: Mouse and human naïve pluripotent stem cells have overlapping but distinct gene regulatory networks and exhibit different direct lineage potencies. Our goal is to uncover the core gene regulatory network shared across mammalian species. Approaches will include genetic perturbations, transcriptome and chromatin analyses, and network inference. This post requires advanced skills in molecular cell genetics, ability to use basic sequencing analysis pipelines, and an interest in molecular networks.

The temperature dependence of microbial respiration remains one of the largest uncertainties in the response of the carbon cycle to climate change. Over short timescales, metabolic rates increase exponentially with temperature. A temperature-induced increase in microbial respiration will lead to an increase in the flux of carbon into the atmosphere, which may lead to more warming, resulting in a positive feedback. However, studies from multiple ecosystem types, have shown a decrease in the temperature sensitivity of community respiration under long-term warming. A dampened response of respiration to temperature would reduce or remove the positive feedback and current anthropogenic emissions would lead to less warming. The underlying ecological and evolutionary mechanisms that contribute to a dampening of the temperature sensitivity of microbial respiration are still up for debate and no consensus has been reached on their relative importance, hindering efforts to capture this important phenomenon in predictive models.

The post will include modelling fire, management and soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions under climate change using a state-of-the-art land surface model. This will include evaluating and improving the novel parameterisation of SOC fractions, including pyrogenic carbon (PyC), in JULES. Large-scale psychiatric genomics studies have catalogued a suite of chromosomal deletions or duplications (copy number variants, CNVs) associated with significantly increased risk of intellectual dysfunction and neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia. The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Research Fellows for the SPOtting Cancer among Comorbidities (SPOCC) programme. This NIHR-funded programme is examining how pre-existing medical conditions put patients at higher risk of having a delayed cancer diagnosis and how an intervention could address this. The successful applicant will support the development and early feasibility testing of the intervention to reduce delays in cancer diagnosis for one or more patient group. They will conduct this part of the study using techniques such as intervention mapping, implementation frameworks, and logic models, and will also help to develop evaluation plans. They will conduct qualitative interviews or focus groups with patients and primary care clinicians for an early feasibility study of the intervention, analyse qualitative data, and write up findings. This role will also involve recruiting and engaging GP practices in the study, including site set-up, and collecting and analysing data on implementation factors such as recruitment, retention, dose, and reach.
