Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position in the Condensed Matter Theory group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham, under the supervision of Dr Stephen Powell. This is a full-time post (36.25 hours) funded by EPSRC and is available from 1 May 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 30 September 2024.

We are currently seeking a Research Associate/Fellow to join a multidisciplinary research project funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) – ‘Mucus-penetrating Peptide Nanoparticles for gene augmentation of CFTR’ – to undertake research on the design and development of a novel class gene therapy for the genetic correction CF by gene augmentation and gene editing strategies. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary research team to deliver two National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) School of Primary Care (SPCR) funded research projects relating to dermatology in primary care. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of the two research projects about recognising and managing dermatological conditions within primary care settings. One is about blistering skin conditions and one is about topical corticosteroid withdrawal syndrome in dermatology patients. The individual will be expected to contribute to ethics submissions and write research protocols, set up and conduct qualitative interviews, analyse interview data, and co-ordinate regular meetings with the project teams.

The purpose of this role will be to work with the Nottingham City Council’s Museums and Galleries Service in undertaking research and other activities which will underpin the exhibition and public engagement activities marking the bicentenary year of the death of Lord Byron in 2024.

This 12-month role is being created to undertake research related to an Industrial funded project to investigate processing of waste materials. The project concerns processing inorganic waste materials to explore their suitability for alternate applications. The purpose of this role is to support the new multi-million £ BBSRC project ‘Delivering Sustainable Wheat’ (DSW). Wheat will play a crucial part in feeding a global population of 10B by 2050 but its production is fragile as more than half the global supply is from just five countries. Future increases in wheat production have to be achieved without equivalent growth in fertiliser (nitrogen fertilisers are a major source of greenhouse gasses) and water use (all wheat growing regions are suffering ground water decline). While facing these challenges farmers are also confronted with yield limiting effects of climate change and new diseases. Adaptations are needed to achieve sustainable production in the coming decades. A key focus of this new role is to assess the impact of changing soil management practices such as reduced tillage on wheat production.

In this project we aim to provide an exemplar application of the hyper-spectral imaging (HSI) based seed imaging platform (developed in Prof Ian Fisk’s team) to pinpoint genes / loci controlling grain quality and grain quality uniformity traits and generate new molecular tools for breeding. We are screening seeds of wheat lines from a diverse collection of landraces and NAM population using our established HSI platform and machine learning algorithms to estimate uniformity grain quality traits (protein content, HFN, starch content, texture, hardness and glutenin fraction). The quantified datasets will be used for GWAS to pinpoint key genes/loci for these traits.

The position is for up to 15 months in the first instance but could be extended by up to 5 years subject to renewal of funding. In this project we aim to review the current range of cotton germplasm and identify desirable traits for cultivation in vertical farming systems. The PDRA will carry out a desk study to identify a short list of current varieties with desirable traits for use in vertical farming and in future breeding. Optimal watering, humidity, growing media and nutrient composition will be investigated and a list of traits beneficial for yield and resource-use efficiency in vertical farming identified together with genetic effects contributing to traits for future breeding.
