About PhD Position

The PhD position is part of the ERC-Advanced Project Nanocubic of prof. Sjoerd Stallinga, in which we target 3D super-resolution microscopy by breakthrough designs of illumination patterns that are sequentially projected into the sample volume, together with advanced image reconstruction techniques. 9. PhD Program in Computational aspects of Bayesian inverse problems with non-Gaussian priors

About PhD Position

In applications such as image processing and materials science, we wish to understand a complex system from noisy observations. This is the challenging setting of inverse problems. The PhD project concerns employing a Bayesian approach to such inverse problems with general, non-Gaussian priors, with the aim of preserving structure available in the information. About PhD Position

The research is part of the AdaptCoast (Adaptive Coastal monitoring and modelling of intermittent anthropogenic and natural impacts on beach-dune systems) project, funded by the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research (NWO). 21. PhD Program in AI-based Synthetic Data Generation for Airports and Airlines

About PhD Position

Sensor data have been increasingly used for assessing, predicting, and optimising performance of airport and airline operations. Data-driven methods and tools from the rapidly developing fields of AI and machine learning have demonstrated their extensive potential to understand and improve air transport operations. However, in some cases, real data may not be readily available (e.g., for new airports or novel, future concepts of operation). To address this issue, in this PhD project, state-of-the-art data-driven methods from AI and machine learning will be used to generate realistic synthetic datasets for airport and airline operations. About PhD Position

Hydrogen can be made in a sustainable way in electrolysers, using green electricity. In this process hydrogen and oxygen bubbles form on electrodes inside a liquid electrolyte. These bubbles are insulating, so cause additional resistance. Bubbles are however also beneficial since they locally remove the dissolved gas that could otherwise cross-over to the other electrode and cause explosive gas mixtures. The goal of this PhD Project is to design a new system for demand-oriented, customizable, and energy efficient rail-based transport service for freight. 29. PhD Program in Machine-learning-based Multi-sensor Detection and Classification

About PhD Position

In this PhD project we will focus on two main topics: (1) the development of novel multi-sensor detection, identification, and classification methods for underwater litter using the various sensors on-board of the underwater robots, and (2) integration of model-based and data-driven approaches for multi-sensor data fusion and detection classification of underwater litter. The economic feasibility and safety of a geological disposal facility for radioactive waste strongly rely on the performance of the host formation. In the Netherlands, appropriate geological layers are poorly indurated clay formations. Currently inspection and maintenance on naval vessels is, to a large degree, scheduled at regular time intervals. Methods for planning of maintenance based on the actual condition, and thus varying time intervals and avoiding unexpected maintenance, are not yet established. 34. PhD Program in Novel DC-DC Converter for Plant Energy Harvesting

About PhD Position

Collecting energy from the environment to power IoT devices has been a hot topic for decades and continues to develop. In this project, we are working with Plant-e on a plant-powered energy harvester, which can provide energy from the plants day and night. Very different from the solid-state energy harvesters such as solar cells, plant-based energy harvester is a “living” energy harvester that responses to electrical conditions slowly, and the traditional maximum power point track (MPPT) techniques cannot be applied. The goal of this project is to develop a novel MPPT technique to quickly and accurately find and track the MPP condition of the plant energy harvester. The climate impact of aviation is not just defined by the sector’s carbon dioxide emissions, but also by the formation of warming contrails, the nitrogen oxides induced ozone formation and methane depletion. And as the sector keeps growing, securing long-distance mobility, it is crucial to significantly reduce aviation’s total climate impact by optimising flight routes. Epidemic processes widely apply to biological and computer network viruses, cascading failures in power grids, the spread of news, rumour or emotions in social networks, transactions in banking networks and to the processing of functions in the human brain. An epidemic process spreads over an underlying network topology or contact graph that is generally changing over time. Standard models used so far are mostly based on Markovian processes and mean-field approximations. As the recent panic caused by Credit Suisse and the Silicon Valley Bank throughout the global banking system and earlier the Covid-19 outbreak have shown, dramatic improvements in modelling spread in networks is crucial to better understand and respond to such crises.

40. PhD Program in Cloudwalker, development and evaluation of a Mechanical Exoskeleton

About PhD Position

A first prototype has been made and tested with healthy people. You will further develop the prototype, based on the test results and on input from end users/patients and possible future manufacturers. You will design new mechanisms for the exoskeleton and build a new prototype. You work most of the week in Delft, but you are also regularly in Rotterdam. In Delft you work on the design and production of new prototypes. You will test your designed prototype with people with spinal cord injury. You will arrange the ethical permission for testing. The tests will take place in Rotterdam, at Erasmus MC and at the Rijndam rehabilitation center. You will publish the results in scientific journals. You present your work at international conferences.

43. PhD Program in transport phenomena in a zinc-air flow battery for electrochemical energy storage

The main objective of this project, called ReZilient, is to demonstrate the first non-critical-raw-materials-based zinc-air flow battery of its kind. It aims to fill the gap between short-term electrochemical energy storage (Li-ion) and long duration chemical energy storage (e.g. hydrogen storage). ReZilient is funded by the European Commission and is executed by a consortium of Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Portuguese, Belgian and Dutch organisations.
