About PhD Program,
The PhD Program at the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business prepares students for research and teaching careers at leading universities. Our program focuses on developing the necessary skills for the design and execution of original, innovative research, and for the dissemination of knowledge through teaching and writing. Throughout the program, PhD students attain a deep understanding of the most influential research in all academic business disciplines, as well as the tools needed to contribute state-of-the-art research to advance specific business disciples in the key program areas that include Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, and Operations.
As a PhD student at the Leeds School of Business, you will be inspired and challenged to investigate complex questions and innovative ideas, as well as work closely with prominent faculty and leading scholars in generating groundbreaking research in your field of study. Leeds PhD students have access to six research centers and initiatives, including the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
- Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, or have done work equivalent to that required for such a degree.
- Show promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research, as judged by the student’s scholastic record.
- Have adequate preparation to enter graduate study in the chosen field. Have at least a 2.75 (2.00=C) undergraduate grade point average.
- Applicants to programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science must have a 3.00 (3.00=B) undergraduate grade point average. Note: applicants who cannot meet this undergraduate standard may still secure regular admission if they have completed 9 semester hours of relevant graduate course work with at least a 3.25 grade point average.
- Students applying to the Leeds PhD Program must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited university or college. A masters-level degree is not required. Previous academic studies do not need to be in business, economics, or related fields. Leeds PhD students come from diverse backgrounds including engineering, psychology, political science, other liberal arts, and the sciences. - you must submit either GMAT or GRE official scores that are less than 5 years old regardless of your previous educational experience. The GMAT/GRE will only be waived if you have a PhD in a related field.
- In recent years admitted students who submitted GMAT scores have had an average score of 711. Admitted students who submitted GRE scores have had an average score of 321.
PhD Funding Coverage,
The Leeds School of Business generally funds all of its PhD students, both international and domestic. All applicants to the Leeds PhD program who submit complete applications by the application deadline are considered for funding. There is no funding application form. Those who have outside funding (e.g., from the government, military, etc.) should make note of this when formally applying to the Leeds PhD Program.
Tuition Waiver and Stipend
The student funding support stipend is $35,000 for the academic year. PhD students funded by Leeds School of Business are required to work 20 hours per week as a research or a teaching assistant. The tuition waiver is equal to approximately $18,512 for a Colorado resident, and $38,700 for a non-Colorado residents. Students who are funded for 20 hours per week receive a partial waiver of student health insurance costs for the Student Gold plan. While the continuation of funding is contingent on satisfactory performance in the program, most doctoral students are funded for five years.
Additional Funding
Additional funding is available through several different sources, including teaching and fellowships. Business doctoral students are encouraged to apply for a summer Gerald Hart Doctoral Research Fellowship. The Hart Fellowship program is designed to encourage and reward early involvement in scholarly research and publication by providing PhD students with additional funding to work with a faculty member on a research project.

- Starting fall 2020, the Leeds PhD Program will allow applicants to take and submit online official GMAT or GRE test scores across all program area. ALL applicants must submit official GMAT or GRE scores that are less than 5 years old. Official scores must be sent directly to us by the testing agencies. GRE scores should be sent to school code 4841. GMAT scores should be sent to code 11S-Z2-41. Please schedule your test early enough to allow time for your official scores to reach us by our application deadline.
- Personal statement of 1–3 pages that explicitly addresses your research interests as well as your career objectives. If you are aware of specific faculty members with whom you would like to conduct research, please list them and explain why you would like to work with them.
- One set of unofficial transcripts from each institution for all higher education you have completed regardless of whether you received a degree. While credits from one institution may appear on the transcript of a second institution, unofficial transcripts must be submitted from each institution, regardless of the length of attendance, and whether or not courses were completed. This includes community colleges, summer sessions, and extension programs. Failure to list and submit transcripts from all institutions previously attended is considered to be a violation of academic ethics and may result in the cancellation of your admission or dismissal from the university. - International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a verifiable score report from TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo that is no more than two (2) year old and sent to us directly by the testing agency. We are unable to accept unverified unofficial scores submitted by the applicant. Alternatively, students can submit verifiable transcripts demonstrating they completed at least one year of full-time academicstudy at a university in the U.S. or a qualifying country within two years of the desired admission term.
