About PhD Program,
The Wisconsin School of Business PhD program provides full-time training in research and teaching in ten areas of study. You will work side by side with globally recognized faculty on research that is changing the face of business in the area of your choice. You will join a collegial community of scholars who support each other’s work and share a passion for inquiry. As a result of this rigorous training, our graduates are successfully placed in tenure-track positions at top universities.
Ten areas of study, or specializations, are offered in the Wisconsin PhD Program in business. Students pursuing a joint degree in finance and economics, insurance and economics, or real estate and economics are admitted to both the Wisconsin School of Business and the economics department at UW–Madison.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements of the Graduate School, including a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. An undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale will be considered for admission. Please see the specific area of study you are interested in applying to for additional academic requirements, as they will vary.
We accept test scores of either the GMAT Focus/GMAT or GRE. The admissions committee reviews the whole application, so test scores make up just a part of the application. While there is no minimum test score required by each doctoral program, on average our incoming class scores in the 90th percentile range. Only one exam score is required, and it can be either the GMAT Focus/GMAT or GRE.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All PhD students admitted to the program will be offered a funding package. Typical funding packages include a monthly stipend as compensation for a teaching or project assistant position as well as scholarship funding. Applicants with strong potential for achievement in an academic setting will also be considered for additional scholarships or fellowships when available.
All completed applications are automatically considered for funding packages. Details on the financial award package will be provided with an admission offer.
The Wisconsin PhD Program in business offers a full funding package to virtually all admitted students. This package typically includes the following:
- Full tuitionremission
- Monthly graduate assistant stipend
- Scholarship
- Comprehensive family health insurance plan
In addition, departments may offer the following:
- Summer teaching, research appointments, or other forms of financial support to supplement the academic year package
- Funding for research presentations at major conferences
In general, students are guaranteed five academic years of financial support. Packages may vary from year to year and from department to department.
