About Fully Funded PhD in Music

The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, provides a fully financed PhD in Music.

The Graduate Group in Music provides five-year Ph.D. programs in Music Studies (ethnomusicology, historical musicology, and music theory) as well as a four-year Ph.D. degree in composition.

All programs provide comprehensive covering of music studies, with concentrations chosen by student preferences. 

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Earned master’s degree prior to entering the PhD.
  • You are expected to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and subject-specific GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • English language proficiency requirements (non-native English speakers)

PhD Funding Coverage

All Ph.D. students admitted into the program are awarded the Benjamin Franklin Fellowship, which covers tuition, general fees, and health insurance for four (Composition) or five (Music Studies: ethnomusicology, historical musicology, music theory) years.

How to Apply Funded PhD Program?

Applicant must submit the following via online portal.

  • A personal statement of approximately 1,000 words.
  • A critical writing sample of approximately 20-30 double-spaced pages.
  • Composers should submit a shorter paper of approximately 15 pages as part of their application in addition to scores and (if possible) a PDF or Word Document linking to recordings of recent compositions.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • GRE not required.
  • Electronic versions of your academic transcripts.
